Author’s Note: Takeout Flavors At Home!
My kids are huge fans of Panda Express. If they had their way, we’d be having orange chicken and chow mein every single week.
As for me? I always choose the Black Pepper Chicken. After mastering all of my family’s favorite takeout dishes at home, I decided it was time to create my own perfect version of the dish I always order when we go out.
I wanted a Black Pepper Chicken with a bold, peppery kick, incredibly tender chicken, perfectly crisp vegetables, and a luscious sauce that coats every single ingredient. After some trial and error, this recipe became an instant winner. It’s incredibly fast to make, uses common pantry ingredients, and honestly, it’s even better than takeout! Plus, I can easily adjust the level of spiciness to suit everyone’s tastes.
This is the Black Pepper Chicken recipe I make for my family now, and it’s the one I keep coming back to time and time again. It’s simple, satisfying, and bursting with flavor – everything you could want in a weeknight dinner.

Black Pepper Chicken Recipe Ingredients
Let’s break down the key ingredients you’ll need to create this fantastic Black Pepper Chicken. Each ingredient plays a vital role in achieving the perfect balance of flavors and textures.
| Ingredient | Swaps or Tips |
|---|---|
| Chicken breasts | Slice them thinly for quick cooking and maximum tenderness. Chicken thighs also work beautifully for a richer, more flavorful bite. |
| Cornstarch | This helps lightly crisp the chicken during cooking and thickens the savory sauce. Arrowroot powder can be used as a substitute in a pinch. |
| Soy sauce & oyster sauce | These are absolutely essential for that authentic umami flavor! Don’t skip them. Use low-sodium soy sauce if you’re watching your sodium intake. |
| Sesame oil | Toasted sesame oil adds a fantastic nutty aroma and flavor. If you don’t have it on hand, vegetable oil can be used as a substitute, but the sesame oil truly elevates the dish. |
| Veggies | Cook the vegetables just until they are crisp-tender – that perfect balance between slightly crunchy and cooked through. This retains their freshness and adds a pleasant texture to the stir-fry. |
| Ginger & garlic paste | Freshly grated ginger and minced garlic work great, but using pastes can save you precious prep time, especially on busy weeknights. |
| Black pepper | This is the star of the show! Start with a smaller amount and gradually add more to customize the level of heat to your liking. Freshly ground black pepper will provide the most intense flavor. |

Cooking Tips for the Best Black Pepper Chicken
Follow these tips for restaurant-quality Black Pepper Chicken every time. Mastering a few key techniques will take your stir-fry skills to the next level!
- Adjust the sweetness and heat: Feel free to add more honey if you prefer a sweeter Black Pepper Chicken, or reduce the amount for a bolder, spicier flavor. Taste as you go and adjust accordingly.
- Slice veggies thin & evenly: Use a mandoline slicer for consistent, paper-thin slices in a flash. Uniformly sliced vegetables cook evenly and create a more visually appealing dish.
- Don’t overcook the chicken: Chicken breast cooks very quickly, so keep a close eye on it to prevent it from drying out. Overcooked chicken will be tough and less enjoyable.
- Marinate for 10–15 minutes: This is the perfect amount of time to allow the flavors to penetrate the chicken without it becoming too mushy.
What To Serve With Black Pepper Chicken
Complete your Black Pepper Chicken meal with these delicious side dishes. A well-rounded meal makes for a satisfying and complete dining experience!
- White rice: My go-to base for this flavorful stir-fry. The rice soaks up the delicious sauce beautifully.
- Fried rice: A fantastic and filling side that allows you to pack in even more vegetables and flavor! It’s a great way to use up leftover rice, too.
- Egg rolls or spring rolls: These fun, crispy appetizers are the perfect way to kick off your meal. Their light and flaky texture complements the stir-fry perfectly.
- Asian cucumber salad: A light and refreshing side dish that provides a cool contrast to the richness of the chicken. The crisp cucumbers and tangy dressing are a delightful palate cleanser.
- Fruit: Serve with whatever fresh fruit you have on hand, or try my fruit salad for a burst of vibrant flavors and vitamins.
