Essential Ingredients for Your Hot Chocolate Snack Mix

Creating this irresistible hot chocolate-inspired snack mix requires a few key components, each playing a crucial role in delivering that authentic cozy flavor and satisfying crunch. Opting for quality ingredients ensures the best possible taste and texture.

  • Chocolate Chex Cereal: The foundation of our mix. Chocolate Chex offers a robust chocolate flavor and an ideal crisp texture that holds up beautifully to the coatings. Always use fresh cereal for maximum crunchiness. Its unique square shape also helps to trap the delicious chocolate and powdered sugar blend.
  • Powdered Sugar: Also known as confectioners’ sugar, this finely milled sugar adds a delicate sweetness and a wonderfully smooth coating to the cereal. It’s essential for creating that signature “dusty” snack mix look and feel.
  • Hot Cocoa Mix: This is where the magic truly happens! A good quality hot cocoa mix infuses the entire snack with that unmistakable hot chocolate flavor. We recommend choosing a mix that includes tiny marshmallows for an extra layer of fun and an authentic hot cocoa experience.
  • Milk Chocolate Chips: The melting chocolate serves as the adhesive layer, binding the powdered sugar and hot cocoa mix to the cereal. High-quality milk chocolate chips provide a rich, creamy, and sweet chocolate flavor that is truly indulgent. Brands like Ghirardelli or Guittard will elevate the taste significantly.
  • Coconut Oil: A secret weapon for perfectly melted chocolate. Coconut oil helps the chocolate melt smoothly, preventing it from seizing and ensuring an even, glossy coating on your Chex cereal. It also adds a subtle richness without imparting a strong coconut flavor, making the chocolate easier to work with.
  • White Chocolate Chips: Used specifically for coating the marshmallows, white chocolate chips offer a sweet, creamy contrast to the darker chocolate-coated cereal. When melted, they create a perfect shell around the marshmallows.
  • Mini Marshmallows: These tiny clouds of sweetness are a must-have for any hot chocolate-themed treat. When coated in white chocolate, they provide a delightful chewy texture that balances the crispness of the cereal, making each bite a symphony of textures and flavors.

Crafting Your Hot Chocolate Snack Mix: A Simple Guide

Making this Hot Chocolate Snack Mix is surprisingly straightforward and incredibly fun. Follow these easy steps to create a batch of this delightful treat:

  1. Preparation is Key: Begin by laying out a large sheet pan with either parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. This will prevent sticking and make cleanup a breeze. In a separate, very large bowl, gently pour your Chocolate Chex cereal and set it aside. Grab a large (2-gallon) freezer bag and in a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and hot cocoa mix until thoroughly combined. Transfer this sweet blend into the freezer bag.
  2. Coating the Cereal with Chocolate: In a medium microwave-safe bowl, combine the milk chocolate chips and 2 tablespoons of coconut oil. Microwave in short bursts of 15 seconds, stirring well after each burst, until the chocolate is fully melted and beautifully smooth. This gentle melting process prevents the chocolate from burning. Once perfectly smooth, pour the melted chocolate mixture over the reserved cereal in the large bowl. Use a spatula to gently stir and fold until every piece of cereal is generously coated.
  3. Adding the Hot Cocoa Dust: Carefully transfer the chocolate-coated cereal into the freezer bag containing the powdered sugar and hot cocoa mix. Seal the bag tightly, ensuring you don’t squeeze out all the air – a little air allows for better shaking. Vigorously shake the bag until the cereal is evenly coated with the powdered sugar mixture. Once coated, pour the cereal back into a large serving bowl.
  4. Creating White Chocolate Marshmallows: In another small microwave-safe bowl, combine the white chocolate chips with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil. Melt using the same short burst method (15 seconds, stirring between) until the white chocolate is completely smooth. Add the miniature marshmallows to the melted white chocolate and stir gently until they are all well coated. Spread these delightful white chocolate-covered marshmallows onto your prepared sheet pan.
  5. Setting and Combining: For the chocolate to set, place the sheet pan in the refrigerator or freezer for about 10 minutes, or allow it to cool at room temperature for approximately 30 minutes. Once set, gently break apart any clustered marshmallows and add them to the large serving bowl with the cereal.
  6. Final Touches and Enjoyment: This is the stage where you can mix in any additional favorite toppings you desire (see our ‘Favorite Additions’ section for ideas). Give everything a final gentle stir to combine. You can serve this delicious Hot Chocolate Snack Mix immediately for optimal freshness and texture, or store it for later enjoyment.

Pro Tips for the Ultimate Hot Chocolate Snack Mix

Achieving snack mix perfection is easy with a few expert tricks up your sleeve. These tips will help you create a batch that’s not only delicious but also visually appealing and perfectly textured:

  • Elevate with Quality Chocolate: The type of chocolate you use significantly impacts the final flavor. For the smoothest melting and richest taste, always opt for good-quality chocolate chips such as Ghirardelli® or Guittard®. Their superior composition leads to a better texture and a more luxurious chocolate experience.
  • Choose Glass for Melting: When melting chocolate, always use glass bowls rather than plastic ones. Plastic can retain odors and oils that may affect the chocolate’s consistency and flavor. Glass heats more evenly, which is crucial for achieving a perfectly smooth, unseized chocolate coating.
  • Fresh Marshmallows are Best: For that delightful chewy contrast against the crunchy cereal, ensure your marshmallows are fresh and soft. Stale marshmallows can become hard or rubbery when coated, detracting from the overall texture of the mix.
  • Customize Sweetness Levels: If you prefer a less sweet snack mix, you have a couple of easy adjustments. Swap out the milk chocolate chips for semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips. Additionally, you can replace the Chocolate Chex with plain Rice Chex cereal to slightly reduce the overall sweetness, allowing the hot cocoa flavor to shine even more.
  • Prevent Clumping: To ensure an even coating and prevent the cereal from clumping together, work quickly when pouring the melted chocolate over the Chex. Stir gently but thoroughly. When shaking in the powdered sugar and hot cocoa mix, ensure the bag is sealed well, but don’t overfill it – this gives the cereal enough room to tumble and get evenly coated.
  • Cool Completely: Patience is a virtue, especially when it comes to setting the chocolate. Allow enough time for both the chocolate-coated cereal and the white chocolate marshmallows to cool and set completely. Rushing this step can result in a messy, sticky mix.

Creative Additions to Jazz Up Your Snack Mix

While the combination of white chocolate marshmallows and cocoa cereal is delightful on its own, part of the fun of snack mixes is customizing them with extra goodies. Here are some fantastic additions to elevate your Hot Chocolate Snack Mix, adding more texture, flavor, and visual appeal:

  • Dehydrated Marshmallows: For an extra dose of hot chocolate authenticity, stir in 1/2 cup of dehydrated marshmallows. These mini, crunchy marshmallows are just like the ones you find in instant hot cocoa packets and add a fun pop of flavor and texture.
  • Sno-Cap® Candies or Chocolate Nonpareils: Add 1 cup of Sno-Cap® candies for their delightful crunch and tiny white sprinkles, or use Chocolate Nonpareils for a similar sweet crunch and elegant appearance. Both options introduce a different kind of chocolate texture.
  • Pirouette® Cookies: For a touch of sophistication and a different type of crunch, coarsely break up 1 cup of Pirouette® cookies and fold them into the mix. Their delicate wafer and creamy filling add a wonderful flavor dimension.
  • Miniature Chocolate Chips: If you believe there’s no such thing as too much chocolate, add in 1 cup of miniature chocolate chips. They nestle perfectly among the cereal and marshmallows, providing bursts of intense chocolate flavor throughout the mix. Here’s how the mix looks with these added in.
  • Crushed Candy Canes: For a festive, minty twist, especially around the holidays, add 1/2 cup of finely crushed candy canes. This transforms the mix into a “peppermint hot chocolate” delight.
  • Pretzel Sticks or Mini Pretzels: Introduce a delightful sweet and salty balance by adding 1 cup of small pretzel sticks or mini pretzels. Their salty crunch beautifully complements the sweetness of the chocolate and marshmallows.
  • Chopped Nuts: For added crunch and a nutty flavor, consider adding 1/2 cup of finely chopped pecans, almonds, or walnuts. Toasting them lightly beforehand can enhance their flavor.
  • Holiday Sprinkles: If you’re making this for a special occasion or holiday, a sprinkle of festive colors can make the mix even more appealing and joyful.

Storage Solutions for Your Snack Mix

Hot Chocolate Snack Mix Storage Guidelines

To keep your Hot Chocolate Snack Mix tasting its best, proper storage is essential. Due to the inclusion of marshmallows, this mix is truly at its peak when enjoyed within 1-2 days of preparation. The marshmallows can start to firm up or lose their soft texture over time, especially if exposed to air.

For slightly longer enjoyment, store the mix in an airtight container (such as Mason jars or Weck® jars) in a cool, dry place. It will generally remain fresh for up to a week. If you plan to make a larger batch or want to enjoy it even further down the line, consider a marshmallow-free version for extended room temperature storage.

You can also freeze leftovers of the snack mix for up to 3 months. For best results when freezing, it’s advisable to freeze the mix without the marshmallows, as freezing can alter their texture. Store it in a sealed, freezer-safe container or heavy-duty freezer bag. When you’re ready to indulge, simply let it thaw at room temperature before serving. If you love the marshmallows, you can always add a fresh batch right before serving after thawing!
