I Took a Classic BLT and Made It Even Better!

A classic BLT sandwich recipe is simple, but when every ingredient is done right it becomes something seriously special. Crispy bacon, juicy tomatoes, fresh lettuce, buttery toasted bread, and a creamy sandwich spread create the ultimate bite.

While the combination is simple, the difference between a good BLT and an unforgettable one is all in the details. The bread needs to be sturdy, the bacon evenly crisp, and the tomatoes ripe and flavorful.

This is my ultimate BLT recipe, with a quick creamy spread and all a reliable tricks for building the best sandwich every time.

And if you love these flavors, you’ve got to try my BLT Pasta Salad next. It has all the same classic ingredients tossed with pasta and a creamy dressing.

All the ingredients in this recipe including bread, sour cream, butter, mustard, mayo, tomato, bacon, avocado, and lettuce prepped out for straightforward assembly.

Ingredients

  • Bread: It is satisfying to country white or sourdough best. Get thick, sturdy slices—they need to hold up a lot!
  • Butter: Use soft, room-temperature butter for straightforward and quick spreading.
  • Bacon: Bake bacon on a wire rack for even cooking and straightforward cleanup.
  • Lettuce: Green leaf lettuce is my go-to.
  • Tomato: Use ripe, firm tomatoes. Heirloom or vine-ripened are best. If the tomato slices are super juicy, set them on a paper towel to drain a bit before adding to the BLT.
  • Avocado: Should be slightly soft to the touch, like pressing the tip of your nose. A evenly ripe avocado adds amazing creaminess.
  • Salt and Pepper: Sprinkle a little salt on tomatoes and pepper on avocado for extra flavor. You don’t need much since bacon is quite salty!

Sandwich Spread

  • Mayo: Use a high-quality brand like Best Foods/Hellman’s.
  • Mustard: Yellow mustard adds a nice tang and flavor.
  • Sour Cream: Adds a bit of creaminess and helps balance the flavors.

Quick Tip

Use a sharp serrated knife to slice the sandwich to keep fillings in place.
