The Story Behind This Recipe: My Kids’ Favorite “Food Group”
Growing up, I always had a love for ranch dressing. It was my go-to condiment for everything: salads, veggies, even pizza! It was just a delicious and versatile addition to so many meals.
Then, I had kids, and I quickly learned that ranch isn’t just a condiment; it’s basically a full-blown food group in their eyes! My boys dip everything in ranch. Carrots, chicken, fries, pizza crusts, and even random leftovers. Anything and everything gets the ranch treatment.
Once that became our reality, I knew I wanted a version of ranch that I could always have on hand, without having to worry about a long list of questionable ingredients. I wanted something I felt good about serving my family, something that was both delicious and made with real, wholesome ingredients.
So, I started experimenting and testing different variations. I wanted a ranch that was creamy but not too heavy, tangy but not too sharp, and, most importantly, packed with a vibrant, fresh herb flavor. Batch after batch, I tweaked the recipe, adjusting ingredients and ratios, until I finally landed on the perfect combination – the one that truly nailed it.
This is now the ranch I keep stocked in my fridge at all times. It’s perfect for dipping veggies, serving with pizza on pizza night, quickly throwing together delicious salads, and satisfying those constant dip-happy kid moments in between. It’s a family favorite that I’m so happy to share with you!

Buttermilk Ranch Dressing Recipe: The Ingredients You’ll Need
The secret to a truly exceptional buttermilk ranch dressing lies in the quality of the ingredients you use. Fresh, high-quality ingredients will make all the difference in the final flavor and texture of your dressing. Here’s a breakdown of the key ingredients and some helpful tips:
| Ingredient | Swaps or Tips |
|---|---|
| Sour cream | Full-fat sour cream provides the best, richest flavor, but a fat-free version can work in a pinch if you’re looking to cut back on calories. |
| Buttermilk | Adjust the amount of buttermilk to achieve your desired consistency. Use more for a pourable dressing and less for a thicker dip. |
| Mayonnaise | Choosing a good brand of mayonnaise really does matter for the overall flavor of the ranch. Opt for a high-quality mayonnaise that you enjoy. |
| Fresh herbs | Fresh herbs are essential for that signature ranch flavor. Dill and chives are my absolute must-haves, but you can customize with other herbs like parsley or cilantro. |
| Garlic powder | Skip fresh garlic in this recipe to maintain a balanced flavor profile. Garlic powder provides a subtle, consistent garlic flavor without being overpowering. |
| White wine vinegar or lemon juice | These add a touch of tanginess to balance the richness of the dressing. Lemon juice gives a slightly fresher, brighter flavor compared to white wine vinegar. |
| Olive oil | Use a good quality extra-virgin olive oil for the best flavor. The olive oil adds a subtle fruity note that complements the other ingredients. |

Recipe Tips for the Best Buttermilk Ranch Dressing
To ensure your buttermilk ranch dressing turns out perfectly every time, here are a few helpful tips and tricks:
- Adjust the thickness: If the dressing is too thick, simply add more buttermilk, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency. If it’s too thin, mix in a little more sour cream or mayonnaise.
- Taste and fix: Don’t be afraid to taste the dressing and adjust the seasonings as needed. Add more salt, pepper, or lemon juice to brighten the flavors and achieve your perfect balance.
- Let it sit: Allowing the dressing to rest in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or even longer, will significantly enhance the flavor. The flavors will meld together and create a richer, more complex taste.
- Experiment with new flavors: Feel free to get creative and mix in different herbs to discover your favorite flavor combinations. Cilantro, basil, or even a pinch of red pepper flakes can add a unique twist to your ranch.

Ready to level up your dressing? This homemade Ranch is a game-changer, packed with fresh herbs and the best ingredients for a flavor burst in every bite!
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes
Servings: 8 servings (1 cup)
Ingredients
- ▢ 1/2 cup sour cream
- ▢ 1/4 cup buttermilk plus more as desired
- ▢ 1/4 cup mayo see note 1
- ▢ 1 tablespoon fresh dill finely minced, see note 2
- ▢ 1 tablespoon Fresh chives finely minced
- ▢ 1 tablespoon parsley finely minced
- ▢ 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- ▢ 2 teaspoons white wine vinegar or lemon juice
- ▢ 2 teaspoons olive oil
- ▢ Salt and pepper
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, combine all the ingredients. Season to taste with salt and pepper (I add 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper).
- Taste dressing and adjust to preference. If you’d like a thinner dressing, add more buttermilk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it’s the desired consistency. Add more lemon juice for more acidity, more salt/pepper, etc. until flavors are vibrant!
- Cover and chill dressing (it tastes even better after about half an hour!). Use as desired, stirring before using, and returning leftovers to the fridge.
Recipe Notes
- Note 1: Use a good mayo; the better the mayo, the better the dressing will taste. I love Hellman’s/Best Foods®.
- Note 2: I love the blend of all 3 herbs in this dressing best (measured after finely minced), but you can use just 1 or 2 for a more subtle flavor. If one of the herbs listed isn’t your favorite, replace it with cilantro. When it comes to parsley, use flat-leaf Italian parsley, not curly; it’s more flavorful. Finely mince the herbs to ensure they’re well integrated into the dressing.
- Storage: Dressing lasts up to a week in an airtight container in the fridge.
