Grilled, Gooey, and Glorious (And Ready in Just 10 Minutes!)

This Ham and Cheese Sandwich is everything It is satisfying to in a quick lunch—straightforward, melty, and packed full of flavor. With just a few ingredients, it comes together in about 10 minutes. A little mayo, mustard, and seasoning take it over the top. No fancy equipment, just simple and satisfying!

I’ve tried and tested hundreds of ham and cheese sandwiches over the years, but this is the one I always come back to. This sandwich may be classic, but small upgrades—like toasting both sides of the bread and layering flavors—make a big difference. Whether you’re short on time or just want something comforting, this one delivers.

All the ingredients in this recipe including the meat, bread, cheddar, mustard, butter, mayo, and garlic powder prepped out for straightforward assembly.

Ingredients

  • Whole grain bread: It is satisfying to the nutty taste of whole grain bread with these ingredients, but feel free to use your favorite bread! Soft white Texas Toast is another great option.
  • Unsalted butter: Use very soft butter for straightforward spreading. You can use butter left at room temperature in a crock.
  • Salt and garlic powder: Sprinkle on just a little for a satisfying flavor boost.
  • Mayo: Adds a nice creaminess to the sandwich. Full-fat for the most flavor, but low-fat works too.
  • Country mustard: Adds a satisfying tangy kick that goes well with the ham and cheddar. If you aren’t a fan, you can leave it out.
  • Sharp Cheddar cheese: Melts well and tastes rich. Be sure to get sharp Cheddar for the best flavor.
  • Deli ham: Thin slices work best; you can specifically request this from the deli. A good smoked ham will deliver the most flavor.

  • Cook: Heat for 3 minutes, flip, and cook for another 2-4 minutes until the edges turn golden and cheese melts.
